Rate Limiting Is Reliability Engineering
A good limiter protects both your infrastructure and your legitimate users. A bad limiter creates outages by blocking normal traffic.
Algorithm Comparison
| Algorithm | Strength | Weakness | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed window | Easy to implement | Boundary burst issues | Internal/admin APIs |
| Sliding window | Fair request distribution | More compute/state cost | Public APIs with variable load |
| Token bucket | Supports bursts safely | Tuning can be tricky | User-facing APIs with spiky behavior |
Practical Design Rules
- Set stricter limits for auth and write-heavy routes.
- Limit by user/API key first, IP second.
- Return
429with retry headers and clear error body. - Track blocked-request metrics to tune limits over time.
Abuse-Resistant Pattern
Combine rate limiting with device fingerprints, WAF bot rules, and behavioral anomaly checks. No single control is enough against modern scripted abuse.
